The National Pawnbrokers Association of Australia is holding its Pawnbrokers & Secondhand Dealers Expo in September 2026.
The Australian pawnbroking and secondhand industry encompasses a wide range of businesses, pawnbrokers, secondhand dealers, jewellery and gold buyers, bullion traders and luxury goods resellers – all involved in lending against, buying and reselling pre-owned goods.
Pawnbroking is often misunderstood. Far from being a fringe activity, it is one of the most tightly regulated retail sectors in the country, governed by state and territory Pawnbrokers and Secondhand Dealers legislation. Operators must hold a licence, pass a “fit and proper person” test, keep detailed transaction records, verify customer identity and report to police – protections that exist to keep both businesses and consumers safe.
For everyday Australians, the industry plays a practical role. Pawnbrokers provide fast, short-term loans secured against goods for people who may not have ready access to mainstream credit, while secondhand dealers give quality items a second life at affordable prices. It’s a sector that quietly supports both household budgets and the circular economy.
The Expo brings this community together in one place. Held on Friday 18 September 2026 at the Sharks Event Centre on the Gold Coast, it’s expected to draw more than 1,000 attendees across 35+ exhibitor booths, with two practical discussion panels – one on compliance, authentication and consumer trust, the other on growth, cashflow and customer connection. A line-up of industry speakers, headlined by celebrity pawnbroker Les Gold, rounds out a full day of networking and education.
